Florin Niculescu is one of the most important musicians on the international jazz scene today, a position confirmed by his many collaborations with other major musicians. He has built his present sound and highly personal language on a solid classical education embellished by his gypsy experience. This genuinely original project, known as Djangophonie, brings together an acoustic manouche jazz band and a classical quartet, alternatively playing written arrangements and improvised parts. Florin Niculescu conceived the whole idea around Django Reinhardt’s own compositions, realising the important influence of classical music on the great guitarist, and it is precisely this largely unrecognised aspect of the composer of ‘Nuages’ that makes Djangophonie unique.
