OCTOBER 2009 - 1CD DIGIPACK
REF: 274 1749

When the Spanish soldier Bernal Díaz del Castillo set sail on one of the ships of Pedro Arias de Ávila, a governor on land, he was unaware that his expedition was taking part in one of the loveliest of crossovers ever to appear in the annals of music. And though today we can only imagine the experiments played out in the Caribbean between the moment the colonists arrived in the West Indies and the first recordings we have knowledge of, what we do know and can appreciate is the unbelievable richness of this Creole music, the unlikely descendant of a host of buried memories and the inevitable clash and compression this produced.
Musical scores from Europe either turned to new use or taken up by slaves with distant memories of their native Africa, courtly tunes and dances used irreverently at shameful wedding ceremonies, can be proud of their progeny : guaguanco, candombe, tango, comparsá, son, biguine, danzón, bolero, meringue, ragtime, jazz… And the list is not complete.
As heirs to this age-old chronicle, the artists on this recording – whether they come from Havana, Lyon, Carcassonne, Santiago de Chile, Lille, Amiens, Buenos Aires, Argenteuil, New York, Alfortville, Guantanamo, New Orleans or Paris – form part of an on-going movement that will last as long as our desire for music does.
